History:
Capensis Chardonnay has had a relatively short but significant history in the world of South African wine. The Capensis project was initiated by Barbara Banke and Anthony Beck, who are both associated with the esteemed Jackson Family Wines. Inspired by their love for South African wines and the potential of Chardonnay from the region, they set out to create a world-class Chardonnay that showcases the unique terroir of South Africa.
The project began in 2011 when they partnered with a group of esteemed South African winegrowers and winemakers. Together, they embarked on a journey to identify and work with exceptional vineyard sites for Chardonnay throughout the Western Cape. The goal was to highlight the diversity and potential of South African terroir through the lens of Chardonnay.
Over several years, the team meticulously selected vineyards from various regions, including Stellenbosch, Elgin, Hemel-en-Aarde, and Overberg, which are known for their cool climates and favorable conditions for Chardonnay. They sought out specific vineyard blocks and clones that would best express the desired characteristics of their wines.
The first release of Capensis Chardonnay was the 2013 vintage, and since then, it has gained recognition and acclaim in the wine world. Capensis quickly established a reputation for producing world-class Chardonnay wines that combine Old World elegance with New World fruit expression.
Capensis employs a minimal intervention approach in winemaking, utilizing both traditional and modern techniques to express the unique qualities of the selected vineyards. The wines are often barrel-fermented and aged in French oak, with a focus on capturing the purity of fruit, complexity, and balance.
While Capensis Chardonnay is still a relatively young brand, it’s already made a splash in the wine industry, solidifying its position as one of the leading producers of premium Chardonnay in South Africa. The project continues to evolve and explore new vineyard sites, aiming to consistently deliver exceptional wines that reflect the diverse terroir of the Western Cape.
