Ask anyone from any generation and you could make a bet they know or have heard this lyrics.
Sailing
Takes me away to where I’ve always heard it could be
Just a dream and the wind to carry me
Soon I will be free..
Christopher Cross‘ 1979 self-titled debut album, wound up with five Grammy Awards, including, for the first time in Grammy history, the “Big Four” most prestigious awards: Record of the Year (for the single “Sailing”), Album of the Year, Song of the Year (also “Sailing”), and Best New Artist.
Cross wrote and recorded three songs which were Top 10 pop radio hits in the U.S. in the early 1980’s: “Sailing” and “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do)” both peaked at #1 while “Ride Like the Wind” shot all the way to #2. However, the song “Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do),” was the 1981 number one pop hit he shared writing credits with Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager, and Peter Allen.
History
In an amazing career spanning over four decades, Cross has sold over 10 million albums. His music has garnered five Grammys, an Oscar, a Golden Globe, an Emmy nomination and five Top 10 singles. Although best known for his vocals and songwriting, Cross has some impressive guitar skills. In fact, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker of Steely Dan asked Christopher Cross to play on their albums, but Cross turned them down. Cross did fill in for Richie Blackmore during a Deep Purple concert in 1970 when Blackmore fell ill. In fact, Cross routinely jammed along with the music legends Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Johnson, and Billy Gibbons to name just a few.
The American singer-songwriter and guitarist, Christopher Charles Geppert was born on May 3, 1951 in beautiful San Antonio, Texas. Cross is Irish on his father’s side. He is the son of Edith and Leo Geppert. His father was born in South Dakota, of half German and half Irish descent, and was a physician for President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s grandchildren, stationed at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Music
Cross says that living with his three siblings at home could get a bit crowded at times. So in order to settle the kids, his father taught them how to play musical instruments. Cross’ father had played bass in college and had said those were some of the best times of his life. Cross said his father would mix himself a cool drink, put a jazz album on the record player, and start playing along with it. “I saw how the music brought light into his darkness.” Cross also developed a friendship with a musician named Al Glasscock, who owned a small sailboat and took him out on Canyon Lake, northeast of San Antonio. Christopher Cross’ song Sailing has since appeared in dozens of film and TV shows over the years.
Cross also received a Hall of Fame award from the Texas Heritage Songwriters Association in 2019. In fact it wasn’t until January 2020 that Billie Eilish became the first artist to repeat Cross’s sweep of the four general categories at the Grammys. Astonishing! That March, while performing in Mexico City, he contracted COVID-19, and soon he also developed Guillain-Barré syndrome, a nervous system disorder, that caused temporary paralysis in his face, hands, and legs. For three weeks, Cross found himself in an ICU, followed by another five months in a wheelchair, this forced him to delay his Fortieth Anniversary tour which coincided with the release of his 1979 debut album.
Religious Life
Cross has expressed his thankfulness for his Catholic upbringing. In 2024, Cross was granted a face to face visit with the Pope in at the Vatican in Rome with the Pope. He said about the visit that, “I’ve been fortunate in my life to meet many famous people. Artists, elected officials, and other heroes of mine. Nothing quite compares to meeting His Holiness #PopeFrancis at The Vatican last month.
Maybe it’s my Catholic upbringing, or reverence for his position in the world, but meeting the Pope in person was magical. He has an aura about him that is clearly very special; his smile is gentle and sincere. I was so touched that he blessed my rosary, as you see in the photo, by placing his hand over mine. A very special moment in my life with this most gracious Holy Father. “

Cross stands 6′ 1½″ and currently lives in San Antonio, Texas. He did have an unfortunate couple of rocky marriages but says he is currently seeing someone whom he feels he can enjoy life with. His children include: Justin Cross, Madison Cross & Rain Cross. His estimated net worth worth as a singer-songwriter is $10 million dollars. Christopher continues to tour and why not treat yourself to an unforgettable show while you can still see this legend live and in concert!
