Roy Keane
The very mention of the name Roy Keane conjured up an expected loss for an opposing team and even today as a on air personality, Roy keeps them guessing.
Roy Maurice Keane was born on August 10, 1971, in Cork, Ireland. He grew up in a working-class family and developed a passion for football at a young age. Keane played youth football for local clubs, including Rockmount and Cobh Ramblers. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation.
His talent was evident, and he was scouted by Nottingham Forest while still a teenager. Keane joined the Forest youth academy and progressed through the ranks to make his professional debut for the club in 1990. His performances quickly caught the attention of bigger clubs, leading to his transfer to Manchester United in 1993.
Throughout his career, Keane remained connected to his Irish roots and represented the Republic of Ireland national team. His upbringing and the values instilled in him during his early life played a significant role in shaping his determined and no-nonsense playing style.
He was raised in a Catholic family and has spoken openly about his faith in many interviews. Keane has always said that his Catholic upbringing has influenced his values and provided him with a strong moral foundation throughout his life and career.
Keane is happily married to his wife of more than 20 years, Teresa whom he met in 1992 while Keane played for Nottingham Forest. The two eventually tied the knot at the Church of Our Lady Crowned in his native village of Mayfield, Co. Cork in 1997. The couple have five lovely children together and their names include Aidan Keane, Caragh Keane, Shannon Keane, Alanna Keane and lastly Leah Keane.
Career
Roy Keane had a distinguished football career. He began his professional career at Nottingham Forest in 1990 and quickly gained recognition for his tenacious playing style and leadership qualities. In 1993, he joined Manchester United for a then-record transfer fee for a British midfielder.
At Manchester United, Keane became an integral part of the team’s success under manager Sir Alex Ferguson. He captained the club from 1997 until his departure in 2005. Keane won numerous domestic and international titles during his time at Manchester United, including seven Premier League titles, four FA Cups, and the UEFA Champions League in 1999. He was known for his combative and influential performances in midfield.
Keane also represented the Republic of Ireland national team. He earned 67 caps and played in major tournaments such as the 1994 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championship in 1988 and 2000.
In 2005, Keane left Manchester United and went on to play for Celtic in Scotland before retiring in 2006. He has been involved with several clubs as an assistant manager and had a stint as the manager of Ipswich Town. Keane is known for his strong personality and outspoken nature both on and off the field.
When asked about his resemblance to a character the the popular television series “Ted Lasso” Keane replied “to me? You’re joking,” along with his familiar poker-faced facial expression.
“I’m a lot nicer than him, you know that. Tell the truth,” Keane added.
