Harry and Meghan pull up their socks
Could it be that Harry and Meghan, the supreme US royals, have listened to their legions of fans? Since December 2022’s shocking and sensational Harry and Meghan Netflix docuseries, fans and non-fans alike have been clamoring for new tidbits and insights into the Montecito marriage and their family relations. It looks like we could be getting something juicy later this year!
Bela Bajaria, chief content officer at Netflix spoke at a recent event in Hollywood to announce their upcoming projects. Harry and Meghan ‘actually have a bunch in development’ Bela shared; ‘a movie in development, a scripted series that they’re working on’, plus ‘a couple of unscripted things’. Gosh that sounds like the Windsor-Markles have been seriously busy all of 2023, but then Bela dropped the comment that all these projects are in ‘very early development’! What have they been doing for the last twelve months? Who are the lazy ones here, Netflix or is it the canny pair?
Well the truth is perhaps neither! Harry had a chock-a-block busy year and hasn’t had a minute since he dipped his toe into the slightly frosty Californian New Year of a year ago. Less of a dip and probably more of a plunge! Out Harry thrust, front and center with his shocking shadow-written autobiography Spare. PR junkets and interviews abounded. Sensational snippets and titilating tidbits enticed more of us than we might ever have imagined into Harry’s world; from tales of Siberian six-inch members to feats of fraternal frays. All of it was very entertaining, most of it was very unnecessary and much of it was deeply unedifying.
Don’t forget the legal cases. Harry and Meghan have launched at least seven lawsuits against US. And British media outlets since 2019. Harry is also challenging the Home Office over a decision to downgrade his security protection when visiting the UK, reflecting his downgraded royal position. Early in the year we had the case against the Mirror Newsgroup for alleged phone-hacking. Harry sued the News Group Newspapers, publisher of the News of the World and The Sun tabloid papers, for alleged phone hacking. Harry was part of a group of well known public figures who sued the Associated Newspapers for ….. yes, you’ve got it – alleged phone hacking. He’s also had other case against Associated Newspapers for libel and when the paper accused Harry of having snubbed the Royal Marines. In another lawsuit Harry accuses the Mail on Sunday of accusing him of trying to mislead the public about Harry’s legal battle with the government over his UK police protection. Meghan has already wrapped up and won her case against Associated Newspapers for publishing excerpts of a private letter she had written to her father in 2018.
At some point the desire to pay bills and feed one’s own family must trump the love of suing and pursuing through the legal system. Let’s hope 2024 is the year Harry learns his lessons. With his Netflix deal in the final year of its contract, a couple of docuseries ‘Harry and Meghan’, and ‘Live to Lead’ and the documentary ‘The Heart of Invictus’ in the bag, it’s time to get a move on. The truth is, no matter what they come up with, we will all lap it up! Good or bad, beautiful or ugly, cringeworthy or credit-earning; the public seems to have an insatiable appetite for anything and everything Haz & Megs. I for one am rooting for them and their next project release date can’t come soon enough!
