Some background on the navy rum.

Pusser’s Rum is a brand of rum that is known for its association with the British Royal Navy. The rum takes its name from the slang term “pusser,” which refers to a purser or steward on a ship. Pusser’s Rum has a long and storied history, dating back to the 17th century.

Originally, Pusser’s Rum was issued as a daily ration to sailors in the British Royal Navy. It was a tradition that lasted for over 300 years until it was discontinued in 1970. The rum was highly regarded by the sailors, and it became an integral part of naval culture. Pusser’s Rum was also used to make traditional naval cocktails like the “Grog.”

In the 1970s, Charles Tobias, a former officer in the United States Coast Guard, obtained the rights to the original Royal Navy rum recipe. He created Pusser’s Rum Ltd. and began producing Pusser’s Rum for commercial sale. The company aimed to recreate the authentic flavor and character of the rum that was enjoyed by sailors in the Royal Navy.

Pusser’s Rum is made using a blend of several rums from different Caribbean distilleries. The exact blend and aging process are closely guarded secrets, but the rum is known for its rich and full-bodied flavor profile. It has a distinctively British-style navy rum character, with notes of molasses, toffee, spices, and oak.

Today, Pusser’s Rum is available in different expressions, including their flagship Blue Label and the higher-end Gunpowder Proof. The rum is popular among rum enthusiasts and collectors who appreciate its historical significance and unique taste.
