The Beer of Kilkenny

Kilkenny Beer

Sweet and velvety smooth. That’s the only way we’d sum up a pint of Kilkenny Irish Cream Ale.

Kilkenny, a not-to-miss under the radar medieval city in southeast Ireland, which has an abundance of charm and uniqueness and a great destination when planning a trip to Ireland. Known for its rich history, winning GAA hurling team, vibrant arts scene, and warm hospitality, it offers a variety of unique experiences in a cozy compact and walkable city or borough as they call it. A centrepiece of the city is Kilkenny Cathedral which translates to “Church of St. Canice,” was originally a Catholic Church on the site of the present cathedral in Kilkenny city in the 6th century.

Kilkenny Irish Cream Ale is a beloved beer originating from Kilkenny, Ireland, dating back to 1710 and it has a rich history and distinct character. We had our pint poured at the gorgeous Lanigan’s Bar near John’s Bridge.

What’s it like?
Kilkenny Irish Cream Ale pours an absolutely gorgeous ruby-red, honey color, capped with a creamy, off-white head that settles into a thick layer, with a nice lacing on the glass. Its presentation is evocative of its Irish heritage, offering an inviting and classic pub-style aesthetic. You almost don’t want to disturb the alluring look of a Kilkenny as it stands in its glass vessel.

Let’s just say this beer’s aroma is mild and pleasant, with notes of caramel, malt, and a hint of nuttiness. There’s a subtle hop presence, but it remains in the background, letting the malty sweetness take the lead. Kilkenny has a smooth, creamy mouthfeel, thanks to its nitrogenated dispensing system, similar to what is used in a Guinness.

There are Malt-forward notes of caramel, toffee, and then biscuit tones dominate.
Mild bitterness: The hops provide balance, but is understated, ensuring a beer which isn’t overly sweet.
Slightly nutty, gentle, earthy undertone which adds depth. The beer finishes clean with a lingering malty sweetness.

History

Kilkenny Irish Cream Ale was initially brewed by Smithwick’s, Ireland’s oldest brewery, established in 1710 in Kilkenny City. The Smithwick family ran the brewery for over 250 years. It was eventually acquired by Guinness parent Diageo.
The ale itself takes its name from Kilkenny, a historic city known for its medieval heritage and brewing traditions. Kilkenny is a place of pride in Ireland, contributing to the brand’s strong cultural identity. The Kilkenny Cats are also the country’s most successful hurling team in GAA history and have won All-Ireland champions on 36 occasions with Cork and Tipperary in the distance.

Architect James Hoban, was born in Kilkenny and emigrated to the U.S. at age 30. He was the original architect of the White House in Washington D.C, built in 1800. What’s amazing is Hoban was born into a family of poor tenant farmers but learned his trade as a carpenter, became a skilled draftsman and was later sponsored by the Earl of Desart at a school Dublin.
